Here are some mental health facts from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2024:
- Mental illness prevalence
57.8 million adults in the United States live with some form of mental illness, and the severity can vary from person to person, and
mental health crisis. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) recognizes that the country is facing an unprecedented mental health crisis that disproportionately affects certain populations, such as youth, veterans, marginalized communities, and people with existing mental illnesses.
- Untreated mental illness
Suicide is one of the most tragic outcomes of untreated mental illness, and in 2020 it was the second leading cause of death for young people aged 10–34 and the twelfth leading cause of death overall.
- Mental health services
In 2021, 47.2% of adults with AMI received mental health services in the past year, including inpatient or outpatient treatment, counseling, or prescription medication. More females (51.7%) than males (40.0%) received services.
